Green Slimes (2)

Ooze monsters are always fun, and they come in many colorful hues. These were originally grey oozes made by Threat Factory, but I already have a set of gray oozes as WIPs in a different style, and I thought the ooze-on-a-wall design to fit well with the green slime aesthetic.

I was also partially inspired to paint these by the mysterious holiday green jello that is a traditional food at my family gatherings. I'm not a fan, but I'd be bummed if it weren't there.

These were effectively a speed paint, and the whole thing came together pretty smoothly up until the end. I use a craft high-gloss sealer on the ooze parts for a really wet look, but I applied it too thickly and I got a little cracking that needed to be patched. In the future I'll be sure to use a thinner layer of gloss.

Gelatinous Cube

Wellllllll, some posts just don't seem that impressive. looking at you semi-transparent ooze cube! Given that, I really thought making one was going to be easy - HA! how wrong I was.

This model is from epic miniatures, printed in clear resin. The model is hollow, presumably so it can sit over another model and engulf it. I'm not a huge fan of that type of gimmick, so I elected to fill the cavity with clear epoxy resin. I made some mistakes here - I was in a rush and I didn't do the optional steps to remove bubbles. As a consequence, the cube has loads of tiny bubbles that give it a foggy look. I ultimately hope to make some cubes with items floating in them, so Ill need to work on getting my resin clear moving forward.

The second pitfall was the frosty nature of the layers of the print. I initially tried using a gloss coat, and it sorta' worked to clear it up but resulted in some paint checking around "drip" features that needed to be carved or sanded away. the layer was a bit on the thin side to prevent checking, which allowed the print layers to remain more visible. So, I ended up painting on print resin as a coating, then coating that with a thin layer of gloss.

The final obstacle was how to attach the cube to the base I had sculpted and painted (a 60mm base, which broke in half at one point - this project did not go smoothly). I settled on welding it to the base with more clear UV resin, but I left a few bubbles in places, and while it worked out it was far from easy, and definitely messy. still, not a bad strategy (especially since the other option was epoxy resin with very long cure times), but an error would've been costly.

The next one will be better! I plan on two more at some point with different details and "floaters."

I cant promise better photos, though, they are just clear goo, after all.

Gray Ooze

I said I would post more Oozes, and I delivered! I painted this nice little ooze earlier this year in a single session. It was a free 3D file from "Amalya" on MMF, and it was just too well done to pass over. the paint work is simple: monochromatic and lots of gloss, but I think it is really effective as a gray ooze. it is simple enough that I should be able to make similar models myself (a good exercise) so that I can field enough to run most modules (1-3 should do it).

Gray-on-gray probably wasn't the best photography choice, but I suppose it plays to the monsters skill set.

Ochre Jelly & split

An exclusive post! LOL. Since my blog/gallery has so little traffic they will effectively remain unseen ( ultra-exclusive!). I completed this ochre jelly in 2020, but I was unsatisfied with these pictures so it was never posted. I have come to the realization that it wasn't the pictures I didn't want to post, but rather that the models themselves were pretty uninteresting as simple blobs of orange ooze- ha! In any case, they deserve some sort of love - they are widely used in adventure modules so surely someone will find them interesting/useful. I couldn't find any suitable ochre jelly models on the market that captured the complete progression of the monster with its "split" ability with enough variety, so I sculpted these with polymer clay. I think the sculpts themselves are decent and the mass of the medium (25mm base) and small (20mm base) jellies works well - success! I could've taken the paint to another level, but the simple two tone paint with a wash and gloss-coat definitely does the job.

After making these I realized that the I need a second ooze for DoIP (and probably more for OoTA), so I will have to replicate this design for at least another pair of each size, but that shouldn't bee too difficult. A variety of other oozes is high on my to-do list due to how easy they are to work on, so expect to see more of the classics and some unusual varieties between humanoids.
